An Entire Destination Is Running Off-Grid on Solar and Storage

Flip every switch at Saudi Arabia's Red Sea destination and not one electron arrives from the national grid. On September 6th, the Acwa-led consortium behind the project announced full commercial operation of what the partners call the world's largest integrated off-grid renewable utilities system.
The hardware pairs 340 MWac of solar with a 1,227 MWh battery the consortium describes as the largest off-grid storage facility anywhere, and the combination is built to deliver up to 760,000 MWh of clean electricity a year, under a 25-year concession, representing about $1.84 billion of investment. Mohammad Abunayyan, founder and chairman of Acwa (formerly ACWA Power), called it a new global benchmark for sustainable development.
For a sense of scale, 760,000 MWh is a year of electricity for roughly 70,000 average American homes, or about 3,200 typical US office buildings, based on EIA consumption averages. The battery alone stores a full day of electricity for more than 40,000 of those homes, which is the entire trick of running a destination on sunshine around the clock.
Electricity is only part of it. The same off-grid platform runs seawater desalination, 32,500 refrigeration tons of district cooling, and wastewater treatment for developer Red Sea Global, serving everything from the operational hotels to Red Sea International Airport to the staff village. John Pagano, Red Sea Global's Group CEO, has said the no-grid-connection model demonstrates that sustainable infrastructure can support tourism at scale.
The consortium claims the system avoids roughly 600,000 tons of CO2 a year at full capacity. The number is company-reported, but it passes a simple sanity check. A site this remote would otherwise burn diesel, and the claimed savings work out to about 0.8 tons of CO2 per MWh generated, which matches what diesel generators typically emit.
The story comes with two caveats. The performance numbers are the consortium's own.
The larger caveat is that decarbonizing a luxury destination's operations does nothing about its largest footprint: guests still fly in. Even so, as a bankable proof point that solar-plus-storage can run an entire district's utilities off-grid, day and night, this is the reference project to study for island grids and for any campus stuck in an interconnection queue.
